How to Read a Pet Food Label

How many of you look at your dog food labels? When you do, do you understand what it says? I recieved this handy dandy guide to helping you read your dog food labels from the great folks at Hills Pet Nutrition and thought I'd share it with you!

How to Read a Pet Food Label

As pet owners, what is the one thing we all have in common that we do every day which impacts the health of our pets? We feed them! It’s very important that we feed them a pet food that is going to help keep them healthy and live a long, happy life. Since dogs and cats have a condensed lifespan compared to humans, nutrient deficiencies and excesses in their food can have a greater impact on their health. Feeding them a food that has high quality, balanced nutrition may help the long term health of these pets.

Choosing the right food is based on what?

When it comes to determining which pet food is right for your pet, it’s as simple as 1-2-3.
1. Life stage – How old is your pet? Is he a puppy or a kitten? An adult? A mature adult?
2. Lifestyle – Does your pet live indoors, outdoors, both? Is he your running partner, or on your lap while you read a book?
3. Health status – Is your pet healthy, or needing special nutrition?

Life stage: Why choose a pet food for the age of my pet? Good question. Let’s answer that with a question: Is it healthy to feed a teenage boy (ravenous all the time!) the same foods you would feed your grandpa? No of course not. First of all, their metabolism is completely different, as are their nutritional needs. The same goes for pets. That’s why the philosophy of providing your pet with a food that is appropriate for his age is critical.

Here are Hill’s life stage guidelines:
Growth life stage – high nutritional demands for growth and development
o Puppies and kittens age 0 to 1 year Maintenance (Adult) life stage – nutrition that maintains good health
o 1 to 7 years for small & medium breed dogs
o 1 to 5 years for large breed dogs
o 1 to 6 years for cats Mature adult life stage – nutrition that supports healthy aging
o 7+ years for small & medium breed dogs
o 6+ years for large breed dogs
o 6 – 11 years for cats Senior
o 11+.years for cats

Lifestyle: Pets have different energy needs based on their environment and activity. Makes sense, huh? For active dogs, a food that provides calories to sustain their energy is needed. For doggies who curl up on the sofa (& help keep us warm!), their nutritional demands are not as high. We need to help our pets avoid unwanted pounds that they can gain if they’re not burning extra calories.

Health status: This one is a little tougher on us as pet owners, but realistically, our pet doesn’t mind as much. For pets who have a special need like a low calorie food for weight control, or for those pets who have a more serious situation such as kidney issues and need a therapeutic food, the third consideration is health status. Pets who are pregnant or nursing have special nutritional needs, too. Your veterinarian can help you answer the question about your pet’s health status.

Once you answer these questions, your choice is focused on meeting your pet’s nutritional needs. What is the key tool you should use to help you make this decision? The pet food label is the tool you should use. Now, the trick is deciphering the label to find the right information you need to make an educated decision.

How do I decipher information on the label?

While the label may seem a bit daunting to the naked eye, honing in on key pieces of information on the label will make the task of understanding what you’re choosing much less challenging, and you’ll feel much more confident in your choice.

Let’s take a closer look.

There are a lot of nice photos on the bag, marketing claims, bursts, and lots of small print. What does it all mean? This article is going to tell you about the most important information to you that you will find on the label. This information resides in the AAFCO Statement.

AAFCO stands for Association of American Feed Control Officials. A basic goal of AAFCO is to provide a mechanism for developing and implementing uniform laws, regulations, standards and enforcement policies for regulating the manufacture, distribution and sale of animal feeds; resulting in safe, effective, and useful feeds.

AAFCO Statement
The AAFCO Statement provides the two most critical key points of information on a pet food label.
1. What life stage is the food nutritionally balanced for?
2. Which method (formulation or feeding test) was used to determine the life stage for which the food is nutritionally appropriate?

Both of these key points are found in the AAFCO Statement located close to the ingredient panel. Some manufacturers place this on the side of the bag while others place it on the back. Consumers need to locate this information. It's typically like reading the “fine-print.” This information is aside from the marketing claims made on labels, yet it is the information that answers these two critical questions.

Let's break it down using these two examples:

Label A

Label B

Label A Brand X cat food was formulated based on a nutritional guideline; basically like following a recipe. The “Formulation Method”:

 Does not require feeding the product to an animal
 Actual feeding or digestibility trials are not required
 Results can be determined more quickly

Brand X Cat Food is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages. Animal feeding tests using Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) procedures substantiate that Brand Y Dog Food provides complete and balanced nutrition for maintenance of adult dogs.

 There is no guarantee of pet acceptance or nutrient bioavailability when utilizing this method
 Is less expensive to develop the food

The food has been “formulated” in a computer based on AAFCO guidelines, and then it ultimately gets “test fed” on your pet.

Label B Brand Y dog food was test fed using the “Feeding Trial Method.” This method is the gold standard for determining nutritional adequacy for a specific life stage. It is the preferred method. The “Feeding Trial Method”:

 Requires the manufacturer to perform an AAFCO protocol feeding trial as the sole source of nutrition, including required veterinary exams & biological data collection
 Feeding trials are the BEST way to document how pets will perform when fed a specific food using AAFCO Standards

BEST OPTION: Pet food labels with the AAFCO Statement saying the food has been test fed is the optimal choice.

Let’s look at these two examples again.

Label A

Label B

Label A Brand X Cat Food provides nutrition to meet the needs for all life stages. What does that mean? Start your kitten eating this food and continue feeding this food to your cat forever. But, just as we discussed earlier, a human’s nutritional needs change as we go through life, so it does for cats and dogs. When a pet food is for all life stages it must provide nutrition for the most demanding: GROWTH (kittens & puppies). Do cats and dogs need all that extra nutrition as adults and seniors? No, they don’t.

Label B When a food states it provides complete and balanced nutrition for a specific life stage: growth, maintenance (adult), and reproduction (pregnant or nursing), the nutrients in the food are optimal for that life stage.
It can be hard to tell what the life stage a food is for by simply looking at the front of the bag. Some labels have images of adult pets that would lead consumers to believe it’s for the adult life stage. However, looking at the AAFCO Statement, the food very well could be for all life stages meaning it is a growth food. Consumers should always check the AAFCO Statement to assure they’re feeding their pet the best food for their special pet.

Pet food labels can be confusing, but understanding what information you need from the label demystifies the challenge. To choose the right food for your pet, choose the one that is nutritionally appropriate for his life stage, lifestyle, or health condition. Then be sure you look at the AAFCO Statement to assure the food had been test fed.
Brand X Cat Food is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.

Burgers from Stem Cells?

As I was looking through the headlines at CNN I found this interesting news blurb:

One stem cell burger: $330,000

If you're concerned about the ethics of livestock production but don't want to become a vegetarian, consider this: It may be possible to grow meat in a petri dish.

Dr. Mark Post, professor of vascular physiology at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands, is working on creating meat from bovine stem cells. And he's planning to unveil a burger created this way in October, he said Sunday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Vancouver.

Croplands and pastures occupy about 35% of the planet's ice-free land surface, according to a 2007 study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

"Meat consumption is going to double in the next 40 years or so, so we need to come up with alternatives to solve the land issue," Post said.

Post's financial backer, whose identity Post would not disclose, is providing 250,000 euros (about $330,000) toward the development of this hamburger. And the financier has the right to choose who will be the lucky person to taste this futuristic burger, Post said.

The scientists say their creations are not quite at the level of hamburger, though – samples from cultures are currently about 3 centimeters (1.2 inches) long and weigh only half a gram. That's too small to cook. Post hasn't tasted it yet himself.

To get the samples bigger and more burger-looking, scientists may grow them on a spherical surface. Eventually they'd like to be able to create big slabs of meat, Post said.

The color is pinkish-yellowish, and Post and colleagues would like to make it look more appetizing in a natural way. Meat in typical hamburgers gets its color partly from blood. One way to make the stem-cell meat more authentic-looking is to use caffeine to coerce the cells to produce more myoglobin, a type of protein that carries iron and oxygen.

Apart from the "meat," scientists need to grow fat separately, for the juiciness and taste of the final product.

Right now the process doesn't involve harming animals – researchers are using leftover materials from slaughterhouses. But in the future, the process could use animals that would be killed so that all of their stem cells could be harvested, he said.

You could get about 1 million times as many burgers from a single cow using these stem cell methods as you would from traditional processes, Post said.

But obviously Post's process is expensive and requires a lot of effort.

So how long will it take until the process of making stem cell burgers becomes more efficient than regular burgers?

With the resources Post and colleagues have right now, it's never going to happen, he says. With unlimited resources, it would still take 10 to 20 years.

What do you think??

Do you think this is the food wave of the future? How much would you be willing to pay for this 'meat'? Vegetarians - Is this something that would be suitable for you to eat? Animal rights activists - Do you feel this is an awesome alternative to how we get our meat now? If this proves successful should we entertain the idea of using the same process for other types of meats?

Tell me thoughts on this subject in a comment below.

Coffee Luv

Who loves coffee??? I most certainly do! I drink coffee all day, every day and I'm not exaggerating! I am not the average coffee drinker though, I like to spice it up a bit - flavors add to the all-around goodness of a cup of Joe!

Things I have added to my coffee include

*Hot Cocoa
*Pet Milk
*Powdered Milk
*Milk (I usually stick with skim but if I am feeling like I need a sweet treat I will use whole milk)
*Chocolate Milk
*Flavored Creams from all brands (both cream and powder)
*Cappuccino
*Tiny Marshmallows
*A Cinnamon Stick
*Whipped Cream
*Soy Milk
*Some of that iced coffee stuff from the gas station
*Sugar
*Chocolate Shavings
*Caramel topping (the kind you get for ice cream)
*A mix of two or more of the items from this list
*Chocolate Syrup

The 'extra fixens' usually depend on the flavor of the coffee itself. For instance in my pumpkin flavored coffee I will use a spoonful of regular sugar and some skim milk but in my Cappuccino flavored coffee I like to have some hot cocoa powder with a little bit of skim milk! I'm no stranger to cold coffee as well. My favorite is coffee blended with ice, with a little Mocha flavoring!!

Coffee is my staple drink. First thing I do in the morning is get a cup of coffee. If I am going to be in the car for more than 20 minutes or so, I always stop for a coffee to drink on the way. Unlike many other people, I don't have a problem with it keeping me up at night either. I can drink it right up until bedtime and have no trouble getting into la-la land peacefully!

I don't usually stick with any one coffee brand either. I like to try new companies, different roast settings and different base flavors. I have to admit that I own a Keurig so I use all the little coffee k cups BUT I bought the reusable coffee filter to be able to have ground coffee through my Keurig as well.

I am always on the lookout for a new way to flavor my coffee so tell me, How do you spruce up your coffee? Do you have to stop drinking at any certain times to keep from being up most of the night? Have any great coffee related stories? Are you loyal to any specific brands of coffee?

*Now I know that too much of anything is bad for you - coffee should be drank in moderation and a healthier option like drinking the recommended 8 glasses of H2O per day should be at least considered. I am not recommending that anyone drink coffee as their main staple for the day. This posting is more for ideas to spruce up coffee rather than a debate on how healthy it is or isn't for you.*

Yummy Corn Casserole Recipe and Review

If you like corn this is a great recipe for you to try!! I found this online and had to try it!

Only 5 Ingredients Needed:

1 can cream corn
1 can whole kernel corn
1 stick salted butter (melted) *You can always switch out the butter for something like "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" for something more heart healthy*
1 8oz sour cream *low fat would be a healthier option*
1 box Jiffy Corn Muffin mix

How to make and bake:

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Mix everything together in large bowl (drain the water from the corn can). Pour into medium size casserole dish. Cook uncovered for 45 min - 1 hour OR until golden brown, take out and Enjoy!

The house smelled amazing while it was cooking and it turned out so moist!!

This would make a great side to compliment some spicy chili or some hot BBQ chicken!

If you decide to try it come back and leave me a comment on how you liked it!

Fun Valentine's Superstitions!

Superstitious much?

Here's a fun list of superstitions I found for Valentine's Day!!

•If an apple is cut in half, the number of seeds found inside the fruit will indicate the number of children that individual will have.

•To be awoken by a kiss on Valentine's Day is considered lucky. (So pucker up! The Fish kiss is always a fun option!)

•On Valentine's Day, the first guy's/girl's name you read in the paper or hear on the TV or radio will be the name of the man you will marry. (Well Hello Mr. Obama!! lol)

•If you see a squirrel on Valentine's Day, you will marry a cheapskate who will hoard all your money. (Squirrel!! If you've ever seen UP you will get it!)

•If you see a goldfinch on Valentine's Day, you will marry a millionaire. (hmmmmm)

•If you see a robin on Valentine's Day, you will marry a crime fighter. (Maybe they mean Batman or The Green Lantern!)

•If you see a flock of doves on Valentine's Day, you will have a happy, peaceful marriage.(XXXOOO)

•If you find a glove on the road on Valentine's Day, your future beloved will have the other missing glove. (Interesting!)

My Top 5 Favorite Movies

Can you name your 5 favorite movies of all time off the top of your head? Someone asked me that the other day and I couldn't! I had to really think about it. With all the movies out nowadays it's easy to pick 5 that you've loved within the last couple of years but they did say 'of all time'... I really liked the Lord of the Rings series, The Never Ending Story and about a million others... but were they in my top 5?

Normally I am a movie snob, meaning I will not watch a movie more than once. However, when I was thinking about my personal top 5 favorites, I kept thinking about the movies that I have (and wanted to!) watch over and over.

This is what I came up with in no particular order (I love them all!!).....

*Stand By Me - Made in 1986 based on a novella by Stephen King
Directed by Rob Reiner. Starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell and Kieffer Sutherland.

Basic description is - After the death of a friend, a writer recounts a boyhood journey to find the body of a missing boy.
I loved this movie because of how dysfunctional it was and how totally 'real' it seemed. The boys were such good actors! It had drama, emotion, action, horror, humor, it had it all! In fact it's hard to pick just one part of the movie that I like the best. There was a part where all the boys had to wade through a small pond and when they got to the other side they discovered they had leeches all over them! Another part I love is when they are all sitting around the camp fire and Wil Wheaton's character tells them all a story he wrote about a food eating contest. Then there was the part where the boys almost got hit by a train - I could go on and on. It's just such a great movie and the soundtrack isn't bad either!

*My Girl - Made in 1991
Directed by Howard Zieff. Starring Dan Akroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis, Macaulay Culkin and Anna Chlumsky.

Basic description is - A coming of age story of first love and loss.
Super good movie that makes me cry every time I watch it - even still! This young girl’s journey was hard and so beautiful at the same time. If you've never watched it - you should!

*House on Haunted Hill - Made in 1999
Directed by William Malone. Starring Geoffrey Rush, Famke Janssen, Taye Diggs, Peter Gallagher, Chris Kattan, Ali Larter, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Jeffrey Combs and Max Perlich.

Basic description is - A millionaire offers a group of diverse people $1,000,000 to spend the night in a haunted house with a horrifying past.
Awesome movie!! The only one up to date that scared me enough to give me nightmares for a week as an adult!! Love the graphics and the storyline! There were some pretty chilling imagery and terrifying scenarios in this show. There is a sequel to this but in my opinion, it was not nearly as good.

*The Hangover Part 1 - Made in 2009
Directed by Todd Phillips. Starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Heather Graham, Ken Jeong, Mike Tyson and Bryan Callen.

Basic description is - A Las Vegas-set comedy centered around three groomsmen who lose their about-to-be-wed buddy during their drunken misadventures, then must retrace their steps to figure out what happened that night.
Hands down the funniest movie I've watched in a long time! The quotes you cans use from this movie and apply them into real life situations is endless! I think my favorite character in this movie is played by Zach Galifianakis, he has so many funny lines!

*28 Weeks Later - Made in 2007
Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Starring Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne, Robert Carlyle, Imogen Poots and Mackintosh Muggleton.

Basic description is - Six months after the rage virus was inflicted on the population of Great Britain, the US Army helps to secure a small area of London for the survivors to repopulate and start again. But not everything goes to plan.
This movie is also a scary movie - it did not give me nightmares nor is it a super great storyline, but there is one shocking part in this movie that I will never get out of my mind. The scene I am referring to is when the father sees his wife for the first time after she is 'caught' and being held by the military for testing. The father comes into the room that she is being held in and it is just the two of them. She is strapped to a gurney when he comes in the room. If you have seen this movie you know what I am talking about, if not, well let’s just say the next couple of minutes of the show will haunt you. It was so atrocious and unimaginable that I had to stop the movie after watching that part and try to process it before I could finish.

These are my top 5, what are yours? I would love for you to leave me a comment telling me what your top 5 are and why!

Oogie's Gourmet Popcorn Review

I've decided to start off with a yummy review of Oogie's Gourmet Popcorn! If you have never heard of this brand before, you are missing out!

A little tidbit about this company that I thought was neat is that it was created by a small group of college friends experimenting with different recipes in thier kitchen (!) until they found the perfect combinations in 2004/2005, after which they started marketing thier divine gourmet popcorn.

With yummy flavors like:

*Asiago & Cracked Pepper
*Hatch Chili Con Queso
*Movie Lovers Butter
*Romano & Pesto
*Smoked Gouda - my personal favorite!
*Spicy Chipotle & Lime
*Sun-Dried Tomato & Parmesan
*White Cheddar
*Kettle Corn

They have something for everyone to love! The best part is that they only use all natural ingredients, are gluten-free, cholesteral free, have no trans-fats and are kosher! Talk about a healthy snack!

As you can see, my son (who is really picky about his popcorn!) fell in love with the Hatch Chili Con Queso flavor! I almost didn't even get to try some before it was gone!

Personally I really enjoyed the Smoked Gouda, White Cheddar, Asiago and Cracked Pepper, Kettle Corn, Movie Lovers - OK, I really liked them all! There wasn't anyone in the house who didn't find a favorite flavor to eat!

One thing I can't say it enough about this popcorn is that I love, love, love how healthy it is! I always try to keep it on hand to pack into school lunches or for family movie night! That being said, the flavors are so unique and scrumptious it's hard to share sometimes!

Want to know a little secret of mine?? I have a couple of bags of Oogie's hidden from the kids downstairs for me to enjoy after they go to bed!! They fit very nicely into my New Years resolution to eat healthier, and thier amazingly rich, distinctive taste is so addictive!

Interested in trying some?? Right now Oogie's Gourmet Popcorn is holding a year long promotion through facebook with 1 winner every week recieving a case of Oogie's Gourmet Popcorn and 1 grand prize winner per month recieving various different prizes!! This month's grand prize is boxes of goodies from their favorite brands in Colorado! It's super easy to sign up!
