My 'Typical' Day in Corrections as an RN

HaHaHa!!  There are NO typical days in my line of work ๐Ÿ˜…

Of course, I try to keep some resemblance of order throughout the day...  In general, I try to set up my day as follows:

It all starts in the wee hours of the morning - I get to work, grab my 'gear' (lol, my walkie and any new intakes that were brought in overnight) and head to my office where I immediately make a pot of coffee ๐Ÿ˜ and deal with any emergency issues that arose through-out the night.

Then it's medication time - I walk around to all the cells with a Corrections Officer (CO for short) and dispense all the morning meds.  This is my favorite of the two med passes I do because everyone is sleepy with crazy hair ๐Ÿ˜‚ and it's definitely the shorter of the two because nobody is very talkative or inquisitive like they are at the night med pass ๐Ÿ˜‹

After med pass, I write up my daily task list for the CO's, do any counts necessary and start working on anything left over from the previous day - I should note here that at my facility we still do PAPER charting....

Next, I return any phone calls necessary and assemble my 'tools' around that I will need for my inmate rounds for the morning (tb test set ups, camera for medical pictures, blood pressure kit, intake forms, inmate folders etc.) as well as putting out any fires from morning med pass (requests, complaints, emergent issues, etc.)

Directly following clinic time it's on to LUNCH ๐Ÿ˜‹  I'm not going to lie, some days are healthier then others ๐Ÿ˜‚

This is a healthy option, right? ๐Ÿ˜‚

Homemade Chili ๐Ÿ’“ Definitely
 a Healthy option!
Take Out Chinese.... errrr... Not so Healthy ๐Ÿ˜‚
On my way back to the jail, I pick up any refills or new meds from one of our local pharmacies.  I quite often get teased about being a drug dealer because some days I get full bags (yes plural!) of meds from the pharmacy ๐Ÿ˜‚

After coming back for the second part of my shift, I process the medications from pharmacy into our medical system, do any follow up clinic visits and/or medical intakes and finish up any paperwork left over from the morning visits as well as deal with any emergent issues that arose during my brief lunch period.  I try to get in some administrative time during this second half of the shift as well - working on audits, reviewing/updating policies and procedures etc.

Then it's night med pass time followed by quittin' time ๐Ÿ‘

Would you like to know more about my days working as a correctional nurse?  Do you have any questions you'd like to ask about workflow, process or dealing with inmates?  Let me know in a comment!!
