With a serial killer on the loose, the baffling mystery of Aiden’s past, and their tenuous budding romance, Aiden and Fouchard tread through a world of magic and myth on padded shoes, terrified to stir up something neither can control or defeat. Aiden Mercer’s life now centers around lounging on the sunny beaches of his adopted country with a beer in one hand and a coffee in the other while admiring the local male population. After a rough life as a respected detective in DC, playing it cool shouldn’t be too hard, right? With the magical community on his case and dead bodies piling up around town, the responsibility of finding their killer seems fated to fall on him and deny him of his easy living.

Then there is Naël. Cantankerous merman Naël Fouchard's life is focused on bringing up and protecting his little sister. When DNA found at the scene of the murders mark him as the prime suspect, Naël seeks out the help of Aiden, whose reputation as a detective grossly belies his lazy lifestyle and apparent lack of ambition. The chemistry between the strong, stoic Naël and the easygoing Aiden is undeniable, no matter how many walls Aiden builds.

If this unlikely pair can’t come to terms with their feelings for each other long enough to catch the killer, their emotional turmoil might yet allow the murderer to kill them instead.

“Are you coming with us, or what?” Cristina had that look on her face that said, “You  better come if you have any love for your life.” She had her backpack thrown over one shoulder and a baseball cap on her head. Busting through my door early that morning, she was trying to convince me to go on a day adventure to Sintra, a mountain micro-climate only twenty minutes away.
I scratched my one-day scruff and yawned. “No way, Cristina. Not going.” I dragged my bare feet over the tiled floor to my small kitchen to make myself a cup of coffee. “Nothing you say will make me change my mind.”
“I’ll buy you all the travesseiros you want at the Piriquita,” she taunted. Travesseiros were a heavenly confection made with puff pastry and filled with an eggy jam of some kind that had made the Piriquita coffeehouse famous. I had an addiction to those sweet little pillows—literally the translation—and would sell my oldest spawn to get some. “I’ll even call my friend who works there and have him save you the best of the batch.”
My mouth salivated at the thought of biting into a warm, out-of-the-oven travesseiro, but I shook my head. “Tempting, but no. Hell, no.”
Sintra was beautiful, a true magical place. Which was the main reason I avoided it. Too many magical creatures had taken residence in that green paradise to make my visits comfortable. I preferred the company of regulars, so that if I did something stupid—which I did often—the worst thing that could happen would be a black eye and a fat lip. With magical creatures, there was no telling what they would do when pissed off, and I certainly didn’t want to have to hide a rat’s tail like I’d had to do a few years back after pissing off a fairy. The tail eventually fell off once the magic faded, but I’d had to hide in my apartment for two weeks and wear pants and underwear with a hole in the butt area. Not risking that again.
“You’re such a party-pooper,” Cristina said with a pout. “Jorge will be disappointed.”
Ah, well-played, Cristina. Her friend Jorge, also known as the Hottie—at least by me—had on occasion shared my bed and other pieces of furniture around the house. He was the perfect hook-up: easy on the eye, mad skills in bed, and not looking for commitment. My nether regions twanged a little at the memories, but I shook my head again and stood my ground.
Cristina stomped her foot a couple times. My downstairs neighbors wouldn’t be too happy. “Fine!” Even I knew that when a woman said “fine” things were far from it. Heaven protect me; she’d be on a warpath for the rest of the week. “Have fun by yourself.” Ouch. Nice. Reminding me of how pitifully lonely I was.

Natalina Reis

Natalina wrote her first romance at the age of 13 in collaboration with her best friend. Since then she has ventured into other genres, but romance is first and foremost in almost everything she writes. She’s the author of We Will Always Have the Closet, Desert Jewel, Loved You Always, and Lavender Fields.

After earning a degree in tourism and foreign languages, she worked as a tourist guide in her native Portugal for a short time before moving to the United States. She lived in three continents and a few islands, and her knack for languages and linguistics led her to a master’s degree in education. She lives in Virginia where she’s taught English as a Second Language to elementary school children for more years than she cares to admit.

Natalina doesn’t believe you can have too many books or too much coffee. Art and dance make her happy and she is pretty sure she could survive on lobster and bananas alone. When she is not writing or stressing over lesson plans, she shares her life with her husband and two adult sons.
